BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Burlington Police Department spent Tuesday afternoon mingling with Burlingtonians at their annual community barbecue.
Originally, the event was held outside their department, but Chief Brandon del Pozo said being out in downtown Burlington is better for his officers and the community.
“Closing down the street for a few hours turned out to be a great thing,” Chief del Pozo said. “It’s just a really fun opportunity for people to let loose a little and hangout with the police.”
In addition, having a few hours to interact with the community outside of their daily environment is a benefit for the department.
“You can see from us to the State Police to the U.V.M Police to other community members, we’re just interacting in a more routine way under great circumstances,” Chief del Pozo said. “Looking at what the kids are doing speaks for itself.”
The barbecue was held outside of Edmunds Middle School. Other police departments, including Colchester and South Burlington, attended the event as well.
