An early morning fire on Main Street is now out, but not after damaging two homes and a garage, displacing 10 residents.

Rutland Fire Chief James Larsen tells us the alarm for the fire, located on 75 South Main street, came in at 5:08 this morning. When crews arrived, Larsen says they encountered a heavily involved fire in the rear of one of the homes, with the flames spreading to another home and a garage due to a narrow alleyway separating the buildings.

Chief Larsen tells us while investigators are still working to determine the cause of the blaze, the main fire and heat damage was contained on the second floors.

Rutland City Fire was assisted by Rutland Town, West Rutland and Clarendon fire departments. Larsen tells us traffic is flowing in both directions on Main Street, with Rutland City Police assisting in traffic control.

Fire crews are still on scene. We’ll update this story as we gain more information.
