F-35 fighter jets take off from Burlington after unplanned visit
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - The F-35 jets that made an unexpected stop in Burlington this week took to the sky Friday morning shortly after 8 a.m.
The four jets landed in Vermont Wednesday morning due to weather issues and to refuel.
The pilots were en route overseas and had been flying from Hill Air Force Base in Utah.
The unexpected visit comes only months before the Vermont Air National Guard is scheduled to receive it's fleet of F-35s.
Air guard officials say the base handled it well and thought of it as a preview of what's to come.
"We continue to look at our operations, our airmen and families we live in the community, we are a part of the fabric of the community so it matters to us too, it really does, so we continue to look at our flying operation and how we fly the airplane in and out of Burlington to minimize the impact," said Col. David Smith, Vermont Air National Guard.
The landings came on the same day a new noise exposure report was released, suggesting more than 2,000 homes would be affected by the eighteen F-35 fighter jets that will be based there this fall.
