The new owners of Chateaugay Correctional Facility in Franklin County want to turn the 99-acre property in a Jewish summer camp.
Adar Investment Inc. of Canada purchased the prison at auction Tuesday for $600,000.
The minimum bid for the property was $100,000. There were nine registered bidders at the auction, which was held at the Chateaugay Town Hall, according to the New York State Office of General Services.
Closing on the sale of the property will take place over the next several months.
Some local residents wanted to see the former prison, which has 98,000 feet of building space spreasd out over 30 structures, used to address overcrowding in the Franklin County Jail.
The second-highest bidder on the property was Alpha Daycare NYC, an early-childhood learning center in Brooklyn.
