Fraudulent check scheme hits Vermont businesses

Local News

South Burlington Police tell Local 22’s Megan Carpenter two people have been arrested and charged in connection to a fraudulent check scheme, hitting numerous businesses in multiple Vermont counties.

Chief Sean Burke says Eugene Streeter and Kaitlin Nelson of Starksboro stole more than $22,000.

Two victims of the crime are Teresa and Sean Fitzgerald, who own Vermont Mattress and Bedroom Company in Williston.

They say their bank, New England Federal Credit Union, notified them last month about two suspicious checks cashed in the last month.  They totalled just under $2,000.

Police also say several other businesses in Chittenden, Franklin, Addison and possibly Washington Counties have been affected.

Streeter will appear in court on Monday and Nelson will be in court on April 2. They are charged with ‘uttering forged instruments.’  Burke says he expects more arrests to be made in the future, as well as more charges.

Police say that the Fitzgeralds were able to get all their money back.
