Group wants changes in healthcare after death of an autistic man

Local News

Disability Rights Vermont says systemic problems in Vermont’s healthcare system contributed to the death of an autistic man.

Jordan Machia was receiving help through Lamoille County Mental Health, and an investigation by the group found he was sick for days before his death in December 2017. They say his illness was not reported to the health center or a physician.

Disability Rights Vermont also says a contracted living provider didn’t reply with required documentation, and the provider was also slow to give Machia CPR when he was found unresponsive.

The group says they want change and a series of reforms, including training and clear policy on when to consult with medical providers.
