Town officials in Hardwick are warning residents not to drink water from the tap and have issued a boil-water notice effective immediately.

In a Facebook post, the Hardwick Police Department said the drinking water may have been contaminated when the roof failed at the Bridgman Hill Storage Reservoir.

“This situation presents a significant health risk to users of the Hardwick Town Water System,” the post said.

The post added that authorities hope to resolve the problem with the water in 5 to 7 days.

The town is asking residents to allow all water to boil for one minute before it is used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation until further notice.

Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.
