A boat fire in Malletts Bay forced two people to jump ship late Monday morning.
It was just before noon when, according to the Coast Guard, the vessel caught fire, sending plumes of smoke high into the air over Lake Champlain.
The boaters were uninjured and were rescued by good Samaritans sailing by.
“It was a long trail up into the sky and then we could begin to see flickers of light and sure enough you could see even without binoculars, explosions going and the delayed sound reaching the shore here,” said Susan Mahony, who witnessed the fire from the shore in South Hero.
No word on the cause of the fire, which sent the boat to the bottom of Lake Champlain.
