A Newport, New Hampshire man who authorities believe killed his wife earlier this week will not face criminal charges.

New Hampshire Attorney General Gordon MacDonald says George Clarke, 77, is suffering from terminal cognitive and physical health issues, including dementia. Clarke is currently at an unnamed medical facility.

MacDonald says that because of concerns about Clarke’s legal competency, he’s not being charged.

Margaret Clarke, 75, was found dead on Tuesday inside the Newport home that she and her husband shared. An autopsy found that she was killed by a gunshot to the chest. Her death is considered a homicide.
