Two people are in burn unit of a Boston hospital after a fire at an apartment building in Newfane early Wednesday.

Vermont State Police say a man in a first-floor apartment at 73 Adams Hill Rd. woke up to the sound and smell of a fire just outside the only door into or out of the unit.

Fire crews arrived at about 3:30 am and were met with heavy flames outside the apartment, on the roofline and in the ceiling area of a second-floor apartment.

Two occupants of the unit, Robert Black and Casey Savage, suffered serious burns and were transported to Boston for treatment.

The building also suffered about $25,000 in damage.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire, but do not consider it to be suspicious. Electrical or natural causes have been ruled out.
