Newport police officer injured after high-speed pursuit

A Newport police officer sustained minor injuries after his cruiser crashed while chasing down a suspect.

Shortly after 10pm Wednesday night, Newport Police Department’s Officer Andrew Gonyaw saw a motorist commit a violation on Mt. Vernon Street in the town and pursued the individual.

The pursuit led to Schuler Road east of Interstate 91 where Officer Gonyaw lost control of his cruiser during the high-speed pursuit.  Officer Gonyaw went off the roadway and flipped over, and was subsequently transported from the scene by ambulance.
