One man dead in drug-related shootout in Burlington

Police say a shootout Tuesday in Burlington in which one man was killed was likely drug related.

Benzell Hampton, 23, was shot in the head and died in the the driveway of a home on North Willard Street after exchanging gunfire with another man, who was wounded.

Police say the second man, whose name was not released, was shot multiple times. A Black SUV was transporting the wounded man to UVM Medical Center when the driver stopped in the middle of Colchester Avenue and flagged down an ambulance. Police towed the abandoned vehicle away about 3 pm.

The wounded man is expected to survive.

Hampton has arrest records in Vermont, Florida and Georgia, said Burlington Police Chief Brandon del Pozo, and include a concealed weapons charge.  He says crack cocaine was found on his body.
