Plattsburgh senior home residents’ back-to-school advice a hit on social media

Local News

Older residents of New York’s North Country are touching people’s hearts across the globe after going viral on social media.

Sixteen residents of the Plattsburgh Rehabilitation and Nursing Center have shared their advice on Facebook for a younger generation that just went back to school for the fall.

So far, their wisdom has racked up nearly 35,000 shares, more than 12,000 likes and hundreds of comments.

“Try to stay in school as long as you can,” Ronald Mease said.

“Science and math weren’t in my brain power, I didn’t think,” Moe Holdridge said.

“Don’t grow up too fast,” Ellen Dickson said. “We get old quick enough.”

“I’m very glad,” Holdridge said. “I’m very shocked. Very shocked, and very happy.”

“Unbelievable,” Dickson said. “Unbelievable, really. Never thought it would happen. Not in Plattsburgh, anyway, right?”

But it has happened. Responses are coming to the Lake City from halfway around the world, such as: “Lots of love from Amsterdam (the Netherlands)!”

Some of the commenters are even playing along with the seniors’ introductions and pieces of advice, like this one: “Lance, 35, i enjoy biking, love your parents and take care of them.”

One comment even came in from a first-year college student in the Philippines.

“Her classes are much harder than she thought they would be from her high school experience, and seeing the post inspired her to stay in school instead of dropping out,” director of activities Terry Lemieux said.

Lemieux added that a certified nursing assistant had the idea to create the post.

“There’s a lot of advice that will be coming out of this,” Mease said. “I think it’ll mean a lot to their learning.”

The residents who took part range in age from 56 to 93, but one jokester — who seems to know the benefits of staying young at heart — lists his age as 29!
