Local News

UPDATE: Police say an eight hour stand-off ended Friday night, shortly before 11:30. The individual is in custody.

According to a press release from Winooski Police Chief Rick Hebert, the incident began when officers responded to a report of a physical domestic assault at a home on Bellevue Street just after 3:30 pm.

Upon their arrival, a male resident later identified as 57 year-old Adrian Formel was in the backyard, appearing to have a mental health crisis while brandishing a firearm. He immediately walked back inside the house and refused to speak with officers or exit the home.

According to Lieutenant Justin Huizenga, police heard a single gunshot as they were leaving the property.

Police say the other individual who was in the home is not hurt, and some nearby homes were evacuated as a result.

Burlington police assisted with cameras aimed at the house and their Emergency Response Vehicle. Vermont State Police in tactical gear also pulled up to the scene around 5pm.

Formel is being charged with domestic assault and will be held at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility to await arraignment.
