Police suspect arson in Newport City apartment fire

Local News

Vermont State Police say a fire that damaged an apartment building in Newport City is considered suspicious.

When crews arrived Wednesday morning, the saw flames in a first-floor room of the building at Prospect and Third streets.

The windows in eventually broke from the heat and exposure, causing the fire to spread.  Crews say they were able to put the fire out before it did much damage to the second floor.

There is extensive first floor fire, smoke and water damage.

The first-floor tenants were in the process of moving out and not currently living there. An upstairs apartment was vacant.

Police say witnesses told them people could be seen going in and out of the first-floor apartment on a regular basis, including shortly before the fire was reported.

There were no injuries.
