Police identify second Vermont kayaker who died after capsizing in storm

Local News

COLCHESTER, Vt– The 73-year-old man who went missing on Lake Champlain when his kayak flipped over Tuesday during a violent storm has been identified as John Duncan of Huntington.

Colchester Technical Rescuer found Duncan’s body in about 8 feet of water in Malletts Bay at about 9:30 am Wednesday.

Duncan’s kayaking companion, Celine Teeson, 73, also capsized. Her body was pulled from the lake just after 4:30 pm Tuesday. She was pronounced dead in the hospital.

Police say the two kayakers capsized at the end of Camp Edgewater, not far from Thayer Beach, around the time a lightning storm passed through the area.

Police say both kayaks were equipped with flotation devices, but neither Teeson nor Duncan was wearing one when they went into the lake.
