Police ID Rutland man found dead during probation check, but offer no details

Local News

RUTLAND, Vt. – Police have identified the man found dead in his Rutland home Thursday as 59-year-old Joseph M. Johnson, but have provided little other information about the investigation, including how Johnson died.

Johnson was found on the floor of his home at 82 Harrison Ave. by personnel from the Vermont Department of Corrections, who were conducting a probation check.

Investigators have determined that Johnson’s death is suspicious, but say there are no indications that the community is at risk.

The Vermont State Police Crime Scene Search Team was on the scene Thursday night. Police said the man — described by neighbors as quiet — was discovered unresponsive.

This is a developing story and will be updated when more information is available.
