EAST MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – A section of Route 125 from East Middlebury to Ripton is closed due to flooding.

According to Middlebury Fire Chief David Shaw, a six-mile section of the road has been washed out, and V-Trans has been on the scene since 3 pm Thursday working to repair it.

Colchester Fire assisted Middlebury Fire Department in the response, and for several hours Thursday afternoon, a water rescue team was on hand in case residents needed to be evacuated.

As of Thursday night, a rescue won’t be necessary, but Chief Shaw said his staff is prepared for any situation because flooding is common in the area.

“We’ve done evacuations here many times before, residents are pretty receptive to us and they leave quite quickly,” Chief Shaw said. “I suspect this will be a possible wait-and-see period of time.”

As of 8 pm Thursday, Chief Shaw said the river is starting to recede. It is unclear when the road will reopen.
