People in the North Country have more travel options, following an announcement SkyWest Airlines will provide essential air service to Ogdensburg and Massena.

The U.S. Department of Transportation announced the two-year deal this week.

According to Rep. Elise Stefanik, a 50-passenger Canadair Regional jet will provide twelve round trips per community each week to Chicago O’Hare and Washington Dulles.

“The U.S. Department of Transportation’s decision to award SkyWest Airlines EAS funds is a huge win for the North Country.  Not only will the communities of Massena and Ogdensburg have more travel options, but these added flights will attract more tourists to our region, which will in turn bolster economic development in the region. My office diligently advocated for this award, and I’m thrilled to see it has come to fruition,” Stefanik said in a news release provided by her office.

SkyWest will receive a total annual subsidy of $5,997,626.

In August of 2018, SkyWest also moved into Plattsburgh International with flights to Washington, D.C.  after the airline won an essential air contract over PenAir.
