South Hero fire deemed accidental; caused by smoking materials

Local News

Investigators say a fire in South Hero Wednesday night, was caused by smoking materials not properly put out.  The cause is listed as accidental.

Calls came in around 8pm Wednesday, to a multi-family home on 14 Iodine Spring Street.  The home contained three apartments.

State fire investigators say a tenant said she saw flames in the wall next to her back door, and tried to put it out with water.  In the meantime, a neighbor called 911, and everyone left.

When the South Hero Fire Department arrived on scene, crews saw the fire coming out of a second-floor storage room above the door.

One apartment received extensive fire and water damage, the other two had minimal damage.

There were no injuries.

All of the apartments had working carbon monoxide alarms.
