RICHMOND, Vt.- A 48-year-old Sheffield man was killed Friday when the pickup he was driving drifted off southbound I-89 into the median, went airborn into northbound lanes and crashed into a second vehicle.

Bruce Devenger was pronounced dead at UVM Medical Center. A passenger in Devenger’s Dodge Ram, Michael O’Neil, 72, of Sheffield at UVMMC with serious injuries, police said.

The crash, near Richmond and Exit 11, was reported around 7:00 a.m. It brought traffic in both directions of I-89 to a stand still and caused delays late into the morning.

Two other people suffered minor injuries about two hours after the fatal crash.

Police say that, just after southbound traffic on I-89 opened up again at about 9 a.m., a rear-end collision involving a tractor trailer and van shut down one of the southbound lanes.

Police dash-cam video recorded the second crash.

Vermont State Police say both crashes are under investigation.
