Volunteers hit area parks this morning to clean up dog waste in efforts to keep it from making its way into Lake Champlain.
April Stools’ Day was sponsored by the Lake Champlain Committee and Magic Hat Brewing.
Organizers say volunteers scooped up and bagged more than 300 lbs of dog poop Wednesday at parks in Burlington and South Burlington.
The big scoop-up was planned around the snow melt.
“Any contaminants left behind in the parks and beaches can go into the water and contaminate the lake,” said Mark Hegedus, President of Magic Hat Brewing. “Lake Champlain is dear to all of our hearts and an important part of who we are, so we wanted to do our part to help protect it.”
Awards were even given out for the biggest haul. All volunteers enjoyed a free pint of beer at Magic Hat afterward.
