For the Heineberg Highsteppers, age is nothing but a number.
Started in 1995, by Donna Zeo the Highsteppers could be a called a senior version of the Rockettes. The ladies range in age from 65 to 90. They perform line-dance routines to classic jazz and show tunes by the likes of the Andrews Sisters and Frank Sinatra. When LOCAL 22 & LOCAL 44 attended the YWCA’s Women’s Weekend in August, the Highsteppers performed a medley from the Dirty Dancing soundtrack, and Black Eyed Peas.
“This is traditional line dancing and it derives from ballroom and square dancing, which is more ballroom and jazz. It incorporates some tap dancing to keep your brain function working, crossword puzzles (help) a little bit but that doesn’t do it because if you’re using your motor skills and your brain at the same time to remember steps, that’s more of a benefit,” Donna Zeo said.
“I wouldn’t be where I am at my age if I didn’t dance,” Janet Patterson said.
“This class is ongoing for 20 years now, so I have one student who is still with me from that time frame so that’s exciting. I have new people joining all the time and a beginner’s class began September 12,” Zeo said.
“I would just encourage everyone who is aging to dance,” Patterson said.
