Report: Early Investigation Focused on Alleged Relationship Between Joyce Mitchell & David Sweat

DANNEMORA, N.Y. – According to ABC News, the New York State Department of Correction investigated prison worker Joyce Mitchell within the past year over an alleged relationship with 34-year-old David Sweat.

The investigation, according to ABC News, concluded that there was not enough information to take any action against her.

Police are still questioning a Mitchell they say befriended the inmates, trying to figure out if she helped them get the tools used in their escape.

A spokeswoman for the New York Department of Corrections and Community Supervision declined to comment.

Sweat and 48-year-old Richard Matt escaped from the Clinton Correctional Facility on Saturday, June 6.

Sweat was serving a sentence of life without parole for the 2002 killing of a sheriff’s deputy. Matt had been sentenced to 25 years to life for kidnapping and killing a man in 1997.

Both are considered to be a danger to the public. If seen, do not approach.

Anyone with information is asked to contact New York State Police at (518)-563-3761, 911, or their local police department.
