A former Rutland man is being held on the charge of luring a child to have sex.

Vermont State Police say Michael Johnson, 59, of North Walpole, NH, was taken to MVRCC on $25,000 bail.

Authorities say Johnson made contact with a detective who was posing as a 13-year-old girl on the Internet, and sent sexually explicit messages.

Officials say Johnson arranged to meet what he thought was a teenage girl at the Walmart Plaza in Rutland.  Johnson took a bus from New Hampshire to Vermont Friday morning.  When he arrived, police say they arrested Johnson.

Johnson is due in court on Tuesday, Dec. 26.

Boston Marathon’s plan to hand out 70K medals roils runners

by WILLIAM J. KOLE, Associated Press / Mar 4, 2021

BOSTON (AP) — Distance running, traditionally one of the world's most genteel sports, has been roiled by an ugly mid-pandemic squabble over who should get a shot at a coveted Boston Marathon medal.

Rival camps in the running world began snapping at each other's heels this week. It began after the Boston Athletic Association, which still hopes to hold a truncated in-person edition of the planet's most prestigious footrace in October, said it will award medals to up to 70,000 athletes if they go the distance wherever they are.

NEW YORK (AP) — Instead of finishing your leftovers, you let them go bad and buy takeout.

New NAACP head: Black Vermonters deserve to enjoy state, too

by LISA RATHKE, Associated Press / Mar 4, 2021

Mia Schultz has watched three other Black women in Vermont resign from leadership posts in the mostly white state because of harassment and threats. She’s also seen Black acquaintances move away from the progressive state that is home to Bernie Sanders and Ben & Jerry’s ice cream because they felt unwelcomed.

But the 45-year-old mother of two teenage boys feels called to continue fighting racism, which she’s done since moving to the state from southern California six years ago. Now, the former insurance professional is carrying on a broader fight for her community in her new leadership role as president of one of Vermont’s two NAACP branches.
