New York Mayor Arrested for Child Pornography

State police arrested the mayor of Stillwater on child pornography charges.

According to court papers, Rick Nelson downloaded a nude image of a 7- to 10-year-old girl on May 1. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children tipped off police to Nelson’s IP address.

New York State Police investigators seized his personal laptop on Thursday.

“This is still in its infancy,” NYSP Cpt. Richard O’Brien said. “Just seized laptop will now undergo a very thorough forensics examination at our computer crime lab in Albany. That is expected to take several weeks.”

Nelson became village mayor in March 2015.

Police don’t believe he used any village property. They said there is no indication the victim is local.

His family is shocked. NEWS10 ABC reporter Rachel Yonkunas spoke with his son over the phone, who is struggling to understand what happened.

“At this time, I don’t have any comment on the matter,” Patrick Nelson said. “It just happened, so if you’ll forgive me, I’m still processing the whole thing and haven’t had a chance to speak with him.”

Nelson could face more charges pending the outcome of the investigation.  He was charged with Promoting a Sexual Performance by a Child and Possessing a Sexual Performance by a Child.

He is in Saratoga County Jail on $25,000 bail.

His next court appearance is scheduled for September 6.
