NYSP: Search Continues for Escaped Inmates Richard Matt, David Sweat

OWLS HEAD, N.Y. – New York State Police say the search continues for escaped inmates Richard Matt and David Sweat.

Search efforts are focused in Franklin County in the towns of Bellmont, N.Y. and near the town of Malone.

On Thursday, police say they are looking through recreational trails in the region, inspecting seasonal camps, and conducting ground searches of forested areas.

There are more than 1,100 law enforcement officials currently searching for Matt and Sweat.

So far, police say the investigation to the prison escape has generated more than 2,400 leads.

Law enforcement is encouraging the public to remain vigilant. They say they will maintain a strong and visible presence in the region.

Sweat was serving a sentence of life without parole for the 2002 killing of a sheriff’s deputy. Matt had been sentenced to 25 years to life for kidnapping and killing a man in 1997.

Both are considered to be a danger to the public.
