New York State Police have closed Route 374 east of Dannemora between General Leroy Manor Road and Rand Hill Road in West Plattsburgh to investigate a lead involving the escapees from the Clinton Correctional Facility.

Police said they are tracking a new lead in the Cadyville area—in the search for David Sweat and Richard Matt.

Officials said the inmates cut through the steel wall at the back of their cell, crawled down a catwalk, broke through a brick wall, cut their way into and out of a steam pipe, and then sliced through the chain and lock on a manhole cover outside the prison.

Police said Route 374 is likely to remain closed through Thursday morning. Residents can expect an increased police presence in that area, police said.

A detour has been set up using General Leroy Manor Road and Rand Hill Road.

Saranac Central School District will be closed Thursday, too.

Sweat, 34, was serving a sentence of life without parole for the 2002 killing of a sheriff’s deputy. Matt, 48, had been sentenced to 25 years to life for kidnapping and killing a man in 1997.
