No one hurt in fire that forced Hotel Vermont evacuation

News

No one was hurt Tuesday night in a fire that forced the evacuation of a downtown Burlington hotel.

Burlington Fire Dept. Deputy Chief Peter Brown tells us the call came in from Hotel Vermont shortly before 9 p.m. He says the fire appears to have started in duct work leading away from a pizza kitchen in hotel’s restaurant.

The flames spread from the first-floor restaurant and ignited the hotel’s roof. The fire never reached the guest rooms, but heavy smoke forced guests out as they firefighters opened windows for ventilation.

It’s unknown how many people were inside the hotel and restaurant at the time.

Guests and employees were given the all-clear to go back inside about 1 a.m.
