NYSP investigating drowning in Thurston, car with Mexican passports found near pond

THURSTON, N.Y. (WETM) – One person has died after drowning in a pond on Bonny Hill Road in the town of Thurston, according to New York State Police.

According to the NYSP public information officer, two men were fishing at a pond on Bonny Hill Road on Monday evening. At one point, one of the men disappeared after entering the water.

State Police divers searched the pond at sunrise and recovered the remains of the missing person.

State Police have not released the name of the deceased and say they will release it after proper notifications are made.

While at the scene, 18 News located a blue car that appears to have been pulled out of the pond by a chain, which was still attached to the car. Inside the car were two Mexican passports, beer bottles, and fish. The Ford Focus SE has a temporary Pennsylvania license plate.

It’s unknown whether the car is connected to the missing person investigation.
