Outdoor demolition of Burlington Town Center underway

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Wednesday, outdoor demolition of the Burlington Town Center finally began.

Mall owner, Don Sinex watched from his fourth floor office in the Town Center Wednesday afternoon.

"People should have a lot of fun watching this, I mean we're gonna have tower cranes erecting, they'll be swinging in the air hoisting up building materials," said Sinex.

Those walking in the area of Bank Street couldn't help but stop and take a look.

Charles Dinklage works around the corner from the construction.

"It's pretty impressive, I mean, it's gonna be a big hole for a while," said Dinklage.

Outdoor demolition is slated to be done by the end of January, but some business owners like Chiuho Duval are concerned. Duval owns A Single Pebble, directly across from the Town Center.

"Of course we're gonna worry about is construction going to affect business, and we just... we don't know," said Duval.

She wants to let people know, though, the restaurant remains open.

"A lot of people recently come in: 'So, I guess you're closed for lunch because, you know, the construction.' I said, 'No, no, no, no. We are open!'" said Duval.

She hopes the construction won't turn people away, but she and Sinex have an agreement.

"We are working with her so that she's able to serve lunches to all the workers and she's designed and has acquired a food truck. We're gonna allow her to bring that food truck on to the site a number of times a week," said Sinex.

Parking is also another concern for people.

Sinex says the Town Center garage will be the last thing to come down during outdoor demolition, therefore remaining open for the holidays. Additionally, monthly parkers were moved elsewhere in the city, and construction workers are parking off-site.

Sinex was tight-lipped about potential new tenants, but did say one "large tenant" has shown interest. He adds it's possible this tenant could have a lease in the mall soon.

The entire project is anticipated to be complete by Fall 2019.
