Planned Parenthood in Plattsburgh will offer Hormone Replacement Therapy starting in November.

Ashley Tracy is the Lead Clinician at the North Country Planned Parenthood. She said the goal of HRT is to give gender affirmation through a pill or injection of hormones associated with the gender the person identifies with.

Starting November 3rd, Planned Parenthood’s Plattsburgh location will provide the treatment. In Watertown, the Planned Parenthood started offering HRT in April. Tracy said that the transformation she has seen in patients has been amazing. However, HRT is still new to Planned Parenthood so she said the risks are unclear.

“I’ve never read a study that said ‘oh this patient has been on it for 30 years’ it’s after five years we’re starting to see this or after one year we’re starting to see this,” Tracy said. “Clinically speaking that’s not a great study that I would put a lot of trust in. It feels very new, but I imagine if you ask someone who identifies as transgender they would say ‘no we’ve been doing this for years. You just haven’t caught up yet.'”

Residents in Plattsburgh were weary to give opinions due to the controversial nature of the topic. However, Thomas Sanger, said it’s not anyone else’s place to judge.

“Give ’em a break,” Sanger said. “They’re not bothering anybody. Let them live their life.”

Tracy is excited to be a resource for the transgender community.

“We’re finally offering services that we probably should have been offering a long time ago,” she said. “It’s so exciting to say ‘yes, now we can meet your needs.'”

Local 22 & Local 44 was able to speak with the Executive Director of the Adirondack North Country Gender Alliance Organization on the phone. Her name is Kelley Metzger and she is transgender. She agreed with Tracy.

“We need the same services in the North Country,” Metzger said.

Metzger was at a dark place in her life and decided in order to be happy she needed to make the transition from male to female. The issue Metzger was running into was finding a doctor in the North Country that would treat a transgendered person.

“What Planned Parenthood is doing is very important,” Metzger said.
