Vermont State Police say a former teacher at Missisquoi Valley Union High School in Swanton was arrested Friday for lewd and lascivious conduct with a child.
Darren Haynes, 47, of Georgia, is being held at Northwest Correctional Center for lack of $15,000 bail, according to a release from VSP.
Officials say on March 29, detectives assigned to the Northwest Unit for Special Investigations (NUSI) were told of a report made to the Department for Children and Families alleging a former teacher engaged in lewd and lascivious conduct with a female student, while in a classroom.
Authorities say the conduct allegedly happened during the 2015-16 school year over several months, and continued after Haynes’ teaching contract was not renewed.
An investigation by the Residential License and Special Investigations (RLSI) Unit of DCF found Haynes current works at BFA Fairfax, and continued to have illicit contact through social media with the student, according to police.
Haynes is scheduled to be in Vermont Superior Court in Franklin County Tuesday, May 30.
