Vermont State Police say an 87-year-old woman who was hit by what appeared to be a stray bullet has died.

Police say Edith Whitney, of Tunbridge, was pronounced dead at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, at around 8:40 p.m. Monday.

An autopsy in New Hampshire is underway, police said.

Police say Whitney was hit outside her home on Spring Road Saturday evening. She was transported to DHMC where she underwent emergency surgery.

On Monday, State Police said they had spoken to people who were shooting a firearm in Tunbridge around the time Whitney was hit.

Investigators say they recovered shell casings, a firearm and ammunition.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.
