Rainfall Causing Sinkholes Across Vermont

After all the rain we’ve had this summer VTrans is seeing more sinkholes appear across the state.

VTrans was made aware of a small sinkhole Friday morning in front of Koto’s restaurant on Shelburne Road in South Burlington. This, like many sinkholes, was caused by rain water snaking its way down through a crack in the street drain.

John Peduzzi is a Senior Maintenance Worker at VTrans.

“It’s constant right there,” Peduzzi said. “You don’t notice it at first but it’s making its way into these crevices and washing things away slowly.”

Traffic on the road backed up because repair of the sinkhole closed the Northbound lane. The lane is now reopened. However, VTrans said the next time you see crews out working to stay off the phone and pay attention to the signs.
