Clean up at Torrey Hall on the UVM Campus started Friday and is expected to take a few months. Plus– a rare animal and plant collection is safe thanks to metal cabinets that were awarded from a grant two years ago.
Crews were on scene Friday morning removing important items after the building caught fire on Thursday. The University plans to do a full rehab since the hall suffered significant water damage.
Director of Physical Plants Sal Chiarelli said on Friday, “It’ll take a lot of work. A lot of trades. So we’re going to start that process today.”
The building houses many collections of plants and animals for bio diversity and conservation studies. Dave Barrington is the Chair of the Biology Department and has worked with the collection for 43 years.
“I was going… okay time for a new career,” Barrington said. “I mean in the sense that there is so much there that is who I am and what I do as a scientist.”
Barrington said he is grateful he doesn’t have to start over.
