Senator Bernie Sanders: ‘You have the right to determine the future’

The graduating class from Champlain Valley Union High School had the opportunity to hear from former presidential candidate, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.

“I wish from the very bottom of my heart that I could tell you the world that my generation has left to your generation is a world with minimal problems but if I said that I would not be telling you the truth,” said Sanders I- Vermont.

The senator’s commencement speech reflected many of the remarks he made while on the campaign trail. Addressing issues including wealth inequality, corruption and racism; issues Sanders encouraged graduates to deal with head on.

“You and you and you have the right to determine the future of this state and this nation, it is a pretty new concept in world history… It is not a king, queen or czar it is you,” said Sanders.

As for the graduates, they said the message was well received.

Spencer Snipes said, “I thought it was really nice that he the time out of his busy schedule to come here and deliver a really nice speech.”

Eva Rocheleau added, “He was so empowering and I feel so excited to go out into the world and he had a huge call to action.”

Rocheleau says she considers herself an activist and believes she and her classmates are up for the task, “I think it is our job as the younger generation to fight for what we want otherwise we won’t get it.”

Eva and Spencer are both headed to college in New Hampshire and North Carolina respectively.
