PenAir lost it’s bid to keep essential air service in Plattsburgh.
The word from the U.S. Department of Transportation late Tuesday afternoon.
Instead, the department chose SkyWest to bring service to the North Country for the next two years.
Branded as United Express SkyWest will provide Plattsburgh 12 non-stop round trips per week to Washington’s Dulles International Airport.
In a statement to employees, the VP of Sales and Marketing at PenAir said quote ” It does not go unsaid what a remarkable group of employees we have on the east coast and the strong effort all of you displayed for a better outcome. We cannot thank you more!”
The President of the North Country Chamber of Commerce is welcoming SkyWest saying this service has already drawn the support of dozens of major employers and institutions across the region including Montreal.

Plattsburgh Town Supervisor Michael Cashman tweeted:

“The addition of SkyWest service at Plattsburgh International Airport is crucial to our town and region for a myriad of reasons. That list includes access, connecting flights, code share with United, seamless ticketing and on and on. SkyWest will help to elevate Plattsburgh, what SkyWest will in turn experience is a welcoming community that is prepared to take to the sky together. Locally Plattsburgh International Airport is recognized as the premier regional airport in the North Country. Paired with SkyWest as premier service that profile will grow. I look forward to welcoming SkyWest to the town.”
