A 37-year-old Burlington man wanted for attempted murder after he allegedly shot a man on Clarke Street in March has been arrested in Georgia.
Police say Alfred Leon Wisher fled the state after he seriously wounded 28-year-old Khyann Jones.
Information led authorities to Savannah, Georgia, where Wisher was apprehended Monday. Police say he was in a stolen vehicle and tried to elude police on foot before being taken into custody.
“We take these kinds of acts that are thankfully very rare in our city with the utmost seriousness,” said Deputy Chief Jon Murad. “We make certain these cases stay at the top of the pile for our partners and the people we work with.”
Witnesses told police that on the morning of March 24, Wisher approached Jones outside 55 Clarke St.. The two had a brief conversation before Wisher produced a handgun and shot Jones in the head.
Little information has been released regarding Jones’ condition since the incident, but Det. Michael Beliveau offered a brief update during a press conference on Tuesday.
“He’s surrounded by a very strong family and he is a fighter,” Det. Beliveau said.
According to police, there’s an ongoing investigation in Georgia involving Wisher, so it’s possible additional charges could be on the way.
Wisher is being held in Georgia pending extradition to Vermont, where he faces attempted murder charges.
