Suspect in Church Street Stabbing Pleads not Guilty

News

The man suspected of killing a man on Church Street on Wednesday afternoon has pled not guilty to the charges.

Local 22 & Local 44’s Rene Thibault was at the arraignment of Louis Fortier, 36, on Thursday morning.

Fortier appeared via video phone in Chittenden County Superior Court and pled not guilty to the crime. At the hearing, Fortier was ordered to be held at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility without bail.

Police say Fortier stabbed Richard Medina, 43, in the neck and back multiple times close to 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Officials say Medina was pronounced dead shortly after at the University of Vermont Medical Center.

Authorities say witnesses and video surveillance helped police to identify Fortier as the suspect in the case. Police also recovered a knife at the scene.

According to police, both men were transients and police believe the attack was not random. Police are not seeking additional suspects.
