The town of Essex will discuss changes to their current dog ordinance

The town of Essex will discuss changes to their current dog ordinance law after an attack left one dog dead.

Elaine Haney is the chair of the Essex Selectboard and she said a young boy was walking his dog last week when he came across another house that had a dog in it. According to Haney, the dog got out of the house and aggressively attacked the other dog. The two dogs struggled and one of them died.

Haney says the town’s current ordinance is only about dogs biting humans and does not mention dogs biting or attacking other dogs.

The owner of the dog involved in the incident has been fined $50.

Tonight at the town meeting, the selectboard will discuss changes to the ordinance, fines, and a new addition about potentially vicious dogs.

Haney hopes the meeting and potential changes will send a message to dog owners in the community.

“They need to be more attentive to their animals,” said Haney. “It’s important that when they are walking in areas that allow dogs to be off leash that their dogs area actually in voice control.”

The board will either ask the police for more changes to the ordinance or they will approve the changes tonight. Once changes are approved, the town will have another meeting for the public.

At that time, the changes will be adapted to the ordinance. ffffffffffff
