A tractor tractor fully loaded with gas and oil lost control and rolled over Sunday afternoon on I-89 northbound just south of exit 9 in Middlesex, according to police.
Vermont State Police Lt. Garry Scott says the two occupants of the tractor trailer have died.
Police are still investigating what caused the truck to lose control.
Police say the situation is extremely delicate.
“It was carrying different types of fuel diesel and gas that has spilled and created a hazmat issue for us which is now running down into the stream and it is also the possibility of ignition because of the cold temperatures,” said Lt. Scott.
Due to the hazmat risk, the interstate is closed in that area at this time.
I-89 is closed northbound from exit 8 and southbound from exit 9 to exit 8.
Lt. Scott says the investigation into the crash is ongoing.
After that crash, Lt. Scott confirmed there was a multi-vehicle pile up in that area on I-89 southbound. The pile up has since been cleared.
