UPDATE: Missing Vermont mother and son found safe

SOMERSET, Vt.- Vermont State Police say a missing mother and son were found Sunday night in the Green Mountain National Forest.

Police say Allison Passage, 29, and her son, James Lake, 11, both of Bennington were last seen Saturday afternoon near Somerset Reservoir.

The pair were not avid hikers and were unfamiliar with the area.

According to police, two hikers came across the mother and son Sunday evening and called police.

Rescue crews managed to escort the pair out of the woods at around 10 p.m.

After a brief medical evaluation, the mother and son appear to be OK.

The state police Field Force and Criminal divisions, state police Search and Rescue Team, the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department, New England K-9 Search and Rescue, the Upper Valley Wilderness Response Team, Rescue Inc., Wilmington Fire and Rescue and the Bennington Police Department assisted in the investigation.
