Children in Plattsburgh are getting a new place to explore and learn on the waterfront.
A 40 foot USS Saratoga replica is being built for property adjacent to Plattsburgh City Beach.
“We got a spot here at Plattsburgh City Beach that literally overlooks where the naval battle took place so we want to give adults, children, visitors kind of that sense of appreciation for what went on on the lake,” said Steve Peters, Superintendent of Recreation, City of Plattsburgh.
The USS Saratoga was Commodore MacDonough’s flagship in the Battle of Plattsburgh in 1814.
The replica will be a universally-accessible and education play area for kids.
City officials call the waterfront area a “gem” and they’re hoping this play structure will add to it.
“This really is that first shovel in the ground to help us get to where we want to be with this property,” said Peters. “We’re creating this play structure. it’s going to allow us to really be a park that’s available all year round.”
The $75,000 replica is being built in Alberta, Canada by “Charmed Playhouses” and should be ready by the Battle of Plattsburgh celebrations in September.
