Remnants of what investigators are calling a ‘small explosion’ can be seen on the west side of the UTC Aerospace Systems facility in Vergennes Vermont. The explosion forced employees to evacuate Friday, leaving three injured.
Vergennes Fire Department Deputy Chief, Matthew Fraley, told Local 22/Local 44 “I know one of them may be minor burns…I don’t know the rest of the injuries yet”
Just next door is a mobile home community where Local 22/Local 44 spoke with Brenda Owen who was sitting on her computer when the explosion occurred shortly after noon, Friday. Owen did not want to appear on camera but allowed us to record our interview.
Owen recalled, “I went out on my porch and I happened to look across over to UTC and I could see flames coming out and then I could see smoke going up.”
Many fire, and medical personnel responded to the facility which is a production site for aircraft parts. Fire officials say the evacuation went well.
“Being an employee here I know it is trained very well and even our practices are very good,” said Deputy Chief Fraley.
Investigators say there are no hazmat issues because of the blast. However, the explosion is unsettling for those living nearby.
Owen told us, “over there, they have a lot of chemicals and that’s kind of concerning when you live so close.”
By Friday night, all but one had been released from the hospital. The remaining employee is getting treatment according to a company spokesman.
