University of Vermont PhD. candidate Andy Reagan and his team at the Computational Story Lab found the six emotional arcs in every story using a computer.
Reagan and his fellow mathematicians used UVM’s Hedonometer to study about 3,000 books and determined these six arcs:
- Rags-to-riches (rise)
- Riches-to-rags (fall)
- Man-in-a-hole (fall-rise)
- Icarus (rise-fall)
- Cinderella (rise-fall-rise)
- Oedipus (fall-rise-fall)
Watch the video as Reagan explains the methodology and applies it to some familiar novels.
