Nathan Carman arrives in Boston_32390827-159532

A Vermont man suspected in the death of his wealthy grandfather was in court in New Hampshire Tuesday.

Nathan Carman, who represented himself during a probate hearing in Concord, pleaded the fifth when asked about weapons he might own.

Attorneys were inquiring about a rifle that has been missing since Carman’s grandfather, John Chakalos, was shot to death in Connecticut in 2013.

The missing weapon has the same caliber of ammunition as the weapon that was used to kill Chakalos.

Though police have named Carman as a suspect, he has not been charged.

Carman’s aunts are taking legal action to deny him access to his inheritance. They say he is responsible for the death of his mother, who has been missing ever since a boat she and Carman were on sank in 2016.

Officials says Carman and his mother left Rhode Island for a fishing trip on his boat, which sank during the trip.

Carman, of Vernon, Vt., spent eight days on a life raft before being rescued.

His mother’s body was never found.

California now reporting 525 virus deaths every day

by ADAM BEAM, Associated Press / Jan 15, 2021

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — More Californians than ever are dying from the coronavirus -- a knee-bucking 525 every day — and with the number expected to keep climbing state officials said Friday they are sending more refrigerated trailers to act as makeshift morgues for overwhelmed county coroner’s offices.

There are now 98 of the trailers to help county coroners store bodies “with respect and dignity,” Office of Emergency Services Director Mark Ghilarducci said. In Los Angeles County, where on average a person dies every 6 minutes, temporary storage facilities have been set up in the parking lot adjacent to the coroner's office.

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) - The New York State Public Employees Federation (PEF) and the New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association (NYSCOPBA) have both filed lawsuits regarding their members' access to paid coronavirus quarantine leave.

The PEF is suing three state agencies: the Department of Civil Service (DCS), the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) and the Office of Mental Health (OMH), claiming the state has "irrationally and improperly deprived union members of their guaranteed right to paid COVID-19 quarantine leave."
