VIDEO: Authorities investigate explosion at UTC Aerospace Systems in Vergennes


Authorities are investigating an explosion at UTC Aerospace Systems in Vergennes.

Fire officials at the scene say there was some sort of explosion in a production room. Officials believe a piece of equipment exploded, however, that is still under investigation.

Vergennes fire officials said three people were transported to the hospital for minor injuries, however, Porter Medical Center spokesperson Ron Hallman later said four patients were brought to the hospital. He said one patient was transported to UVM Medical Center in Burlington.

Employees were being allowed back into the building at around 1:30 p.m. Friday.

UTC Aerospace Systems public relations manager Al Killeffer sent Local 22 & Local 44 News the following written statement:

“We’re working with emergency responders to continue to assess the situation at our Vergennes facility. At this time we can confirm there was an explosion. All employees were evacuated. Three employees have been transported to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment. Our thoughts are with those affected and we are working with emergency responders to ensure that they receive the appropriate care and relief. We’ll continue to keep you updated as we learn more.”

According to the company’s website, UTC Aerospace’s Systems is one of the world’s largest suppliers of technologically advanced aerospace and defense products.

The company is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina.
