A Vermont Senate committee is taking up two bills that would legalize marijuana for recreational use in the state.
The Senate Judiciary Committee is reviewing the bills Tuesday morning—one proposal looks at the regulation and taxation of marijuana—the other possession and cultivation.

In Vermont, medical marijuana is already legal, and the state got rid of criminal penalties for the possession of small amounts of marijuana.

If the bills pass, Vermont would become the first state to legalize marijuana for recreational use through the state legislature.

The committee is also hearing testimony Tuesday from Bennington Police Chief Paul Doucette, who also chairs  the Vermont Chiefs Association. Rutland County Sheriff Steve Benard is also there.
