Athlete of the Week: Will Hesslink

Athlete of the Week
BURLINGTON, VT — Strange as it may seem, in baseball the ole ‘pie to the face’ is a sign of a job well done. Rice junior Will Hesslink allowed four hits while striking out twelve in this years Division I State Title Baseball Game.

“It feels great, this team has been so amazing, they’re really like a family to me this whole year. We grew together and just came home with it, did what we had to do,” said Hesslink.

Offensively, Hesslink delivered as well. He doubled in extra innings, driving home a pair of runs. Rice went on to beat CVU by a 5-2 final.

“He’s been working really hard all season long, he’s been tremendous for us, I couldn’t be more happy for him , he just went out and earned it for himself,” said Rice Baseball Head Coach Jamie Merchant.

Years from now, when he looks back on this game, Hesslink will remember the hit, but says his performance on the mound sticks out just a little bit more.

“Obviously the last strike out has to be big, ending the game like that you have to love it. Being able to drive in the last two runs were awesome, but none of that’s possible if Remy (Sean Remillard) or AP (Anthony Phillip) don’t get on don’t get around the base and do what they do, it’s not just me.” said Hesslink.

Hesslink struck out the last six batters in the game.

“He just never gives in, he’s never going to lay it over the plate for you , whatever the count is he always is going to make a tough pitch … he’s going to make every hitter earn every at bat and every run they get, they’re going to absolutely earn off him” added Merchant.
